Aging, at times, deprives one of the aesthetic pleasures. As you grow older, the eyelids stretch and the muscle supporting them weakens substantially. This causes excessive fat to gather around the eyelids creating baggy under eyes, flabby eyelids and bowed eyebrows. Blepharoplasty is essentially a surgery that rejuvenates the droopy eyelids. It involves the removal of excess fat, muscles and skin that primarily causes the eye to sag. Not only does it glamorize your eyes but help them function more effectively (sag eyes reduce peripheral vision). Lets know more about eyelid lift surgery! How to prepare eyelid lift surgery?
Before actually undergoing blepharoplasty, it is in your beneficial interest to meet an ophthalmologist (eye specialist) or a plastic surgeon who has rich expertise in eye surgery to discuss your:
01. Medical History - you will be asked about your previous surgeries if any. Additionally, you will be asked about your present conditions, such as glaucoma, circulatory, thyroid problems, dry eyes, diabetes, etc. It is also pertinent to inform the surgeon about the medications, vitamins supplements, drugs you are taking.
02. Your Expectations - an honest consultation of the hopes and inspiration for surgery shall set the foundation for the best outcomes. You will also be required to undergo the following examinations before your blepharoplasty-
03. Physical Examination - it essentially involves a tear production test and taking measurements of the parts of your eyelids.
04. Vision Examination - the ophthalmologist will test your vision and your eyes altogether. It will also help to cover the surgery under the insurance claim.
05. Eyelid Photography - your eyes will be photographed from different angles to plan and evaluate the procedure.
You will be required to quit smoking for a few weeks before surgery. Also, your surgeon may require you to avoid taking certain anti-inflammatory medicines for some time before your blepharoplasty.
Blepharoplasty Procedure
Blepharoplasty is essentially an outpatient treatment, implying a quick discharge. It is a momentary surgery that barely takes two hours. The surgeon carefully injects a number of medications into the eyelids to relax the patient. Normally the upper eyelids are operated upon at first. An incision is made along the fold of your eye. This is followed by the removal of excess fat, muscles and skin. Subsequently, this incision area is sealed. It is important here to mention that if your upper eyelid sags are close to the pupil, the surgeon may perform blepharoplasty using an alternate procedure called ptosis. It provides the required support to your eyebrow muscle.
Blepharoplasty on the lower eyelid is performed by making a cut right below the lashes either in the eyes natural crease or inside of the eyelid. Excessive fat, muscles and sagging skin forming your eye bag are gently extracted. Finally, the surgeon closes the incision site with tiny stitches.
Who is a good candidate for Blepharoplasty?
An eyelid lift surgery is advised if you have:
01. Droopy eyelids
02. Reduced peripheral vision due to excessive skin on the upper eyelid
03. Excessive fat on the lower eyelid
04. Formulation of bags under the eyes
05. Other cosmetic purposes
You may undergo blepharoplasty in isolation or in combination with other surgeries such as face-lift, skin resurfacing or brow lift.
Blepharoplasty Risks and Recovery
Right after your blepharoplasty, you will be moved to a recovery room to closely monitor the post-surgery complications, if any. If your condition remains satisfactory, you’d be allowed to leave in a few hours. Surgery interferes with the otherwise natural arrangement of your body. Therefore, it is but natural to experience certain complications. Blepharoplasty is commonly associated with the following risks:
01. Slightly blurred vision caused by ointments
02. Watery eyes
03. Sensitivity from bright light
04. Double vision
05. Dry eyes
06. Swelling or bruising around the eyes
07. Minor discomfort or pain
08. Temporary scars
It is recommended to be mindful of post-operative care, for it is the expertise of the surgeon coupled with the after care of the patient that determines the success of a surgery.
Most likely your surgeon will suggest you the following for a swift blepharoplasty recovery:
01. Using ice packs frequently for a few days post-surgery.
02. Regular cleaning of the eyes and then applying the cool compresses, prescribed ointments and eye drops.
03. Preventing strenuous activities at least for a week (including jogging, aerobics, swimming, heavy lifting)
04. Not to rub the eyes (use ice packs to prevent itching)
05. Using spectacles instead of contact lenses for a week after the surgery
06. Avoid smoking
07. Protecting your eyes from bright sun and robust winds by using sunglasses
08. Sleeping carefully. Keep your head raised a little higher than the chest
09. Visit your surgeon for removing the stitches, if need be.
10. Avoid taking naproxen sodium, aspirin, ibuprofen, aspirin and other herbal supplements or other medications that increase the risk of bleeding. Acetaminophen may be used (on the recommendation of the doctor) to avoid pain.
However, you must seek immediate medical attention if you experience excruciating chest pain, shortness of breath, severe eye pain, vision problems, unusual heart rate or excessive bleeding.
Blepharoplasty Results
It is common knowledge that the results of any surgery or operation are highly relative. It is the interplay of the following few factors that largely determine the results of surgery:
01. Qualifications and experience of the surgeon
02. Location
03. Aftercare by the patient
04. Post-operative consultation of the doctor, etc.
Most of all, the results of eyelid lift surgery are dramatically thrilling. It boosts energy and self-confidence to new heights. It is important to understand that while the results of blepharoplasty may last for a lifetime for some and for others the droopy eyelids might recur a few years later.
Swelling and bruising generally clear out within ten to fourteen days of the surgery. Although scars may take a few months to fade away, however, you will be able to go out in public without any hesitation whatsoever. Ideally, blepharoplasty is a one-time surgery. However, follow up surgeries may be a recourse in case the results are not satisfactory.
