Botox injections are used to treat wrinkles and facial lines. These injections use a toxin known as onabotulinumtoxinA, which prevents a muscle from moving. This toxin is extracted from a microbe that causes a type of food poisoning known as botulism. Botox is commonly used as it was the first injectable botulinum toxin.
Botulinum toxin is a microbe being used for medical purposes for over a century. In the beginning, it was used to treat lazy eyes, blepharospasm, and wry neck. However, in 2002, it was approved to be used to treat frown lines between the eyes.
It comes as a crystalline substance, this is then combined with salt or another liquid. Most of the time, the amount of his liquid is 2 ml to 3 ml. However, it is the amount of medication that leads to the desired result rather than the volume of liquid.
Before Procedure
It is important to inform the doctor about the type of botox injection if you had it in the past four months. In addition to this, it is also important if you take any kind of medications or have an allergy to medicines. If you are taking blood thinners, you need to stop taking them before injection. Moreover, also avoid alcohol or alcoholic beverages for at least 1 week before the procedure to get desired results and help prevent bruising.
Most people do not feel any sort of discomfort or pain during the procedure. However, if you want the skin to be numbed beforehand, ask your doctor to numb it. The doctor may use topical anesthesia, vibration anesthesia, and ice to reduce discomfort.
During the Procedure
The procedure is performed in the doctors office and takes 10 minutes. The patient will rest on the exam table in the raised position. The area to be injected will be cleaned with a nonalcoholic cleanser. The patient may request the doctor to numb the area if he or she cannot tolerate the discomfort. The Botox is then injected by a thin needle into the area to be treated. The dosage of injection includes four or five areas of the forehead and two or three areas on the eye area.
After the Procedure
The toxin may cause droopy eyelids, blurred vision, or muscle weakness for a few hours. Thus, avoid driving or using any machinery right after the injection. Avoid rubbing or massaging the injected area/s for 24 hours to prevent the spread of the toxin to another area.
The doctor will recommend you to stay upright for 4 hours after the injection. You can return to normal activities the next day. In some cases, especially when you rub the injected area, the injection may spread to other areas of the body. If it is injected between the brows, avoid bending or lying down for 3 to 4 hours after the procedure. This can cause toxins to slip under the orbital rim.
Call your doctor if you have these signs hours or weeks later after the procedure:
01. Blur vision
02. Trouble in speaking
03. Muscle weakness
04. Breathing problems
05. Loss of bladder control
