Lip Augmentation Types
Here are the methods for lip augmentation which are usually used:
01. Dermal Filler Injections (Hyaluronic Acid) - This is a non-surgical temporary option in which hyaluronic acid injections are administered by cosmetic experts. Hyaluronic acid attracts water and keeps the lips appear hydrated and fuller. The results usually last for 6 to 18 months. The procedure takes about 15-30 minutes. Examples of hyaluronic acid fillers are Juvederm Vollure and Revanesse Versa.
02. Collagen Dermal Filler Injections - In addition to Hyaluronic acid, collagen is also used as filler. Collagen takes time to develop but lasts longer in the body. The results may last up to 5 years or so. Collagen-based fillers also rejuvenate the aged or damaged skin.
03. Fat Grafting or Fat Transfer - Fat is extracted from one part of the body with the help of liposuction and then used as a lip filler. Such procedures must be performed by an experienced qualified surgeon. The results can last for several years.
04. Lip Implants - This is a semi-permanent technique for lip enhancement by using lip implants. These lip implants are made of silicone rubber or a biodegradable substance. The procedure is done under local anaesthesia by placing the implants through incisions. The results last for several years. The procedure is safe with minimal side effects.
Lip Augmentation Procedure
Before the procedure, you will be asked to stop taking medications like Aspirin, any herbal supplements or Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs if you are already taking them. You will also need to stop smoking and alcohol consumption for a few days before and after the procedure.
01. For Lip Implants:
1.1. On the day of the procedure, you will be administered local anaesthesia after sterilizing the lip region.
1.2. The surgeon makes an incision on the corner of the mouth on either side and a clamp is inserted to create a pocket.
1.3. The clamp is opened inside the pocket and the implant is inserted.
1.4. After adjusting the position, the clamp is removed and the incision is closed with sutures.
02. For Lip Injections:
2.1. Anaesthesia is administered in the form of a topical gel, local anaesthesia or a nerve block injection to avoid any discomfort.
2.2. The expert marks the areas of injections and fillers are injected through very fine needles.
03. For Fat Transfer Procedure:
Before performing the lip fat transfer procedure, minor liposuction is performed to extract fat from another body part such as the buttocks, stomach, or thighs. This fat is then injected through a very fine needle into the lips. The procedure is usually performed under local anaesthesia. The fat transfer procedure is followed by immediate results and lasts for 6-12 months. The swelling subsides within 1-3 days after the procedure.
After the Procedure
You may have swelling and bruising for a few days. After these signs subside, the results will appear vividly. For a smooth recovery and effective results, you must follow the post-operative care instructions such as,
01. You will be given an ice pack to use on the lips immediately after the procedure. You are supposed to use the ice pack 5 times a day for 15-20 minutes for a few days after the surgery.
02. Do not drink alcohol for at least 24 hours after the procedure.
03. Do not wear lipstick or any product for 1-2 days after the procedure or till the swelling subsides.
